A simple trip to the basement jumpstarted for Phil Nero what would become a six-month journey into the history of baseball and perhaps one final attempt at playing the game he fell in love with as a kid.

All he intended was to store a couple of lawn chairs for the winter. In the process he catches a fleeting glimpse of his old baseball glove, just sitting there collecting dust, and growing rigid. He retrieves it, brings it upstairs, and decides to recondition the stiff, shiny lump of dried-out leather.

As the leather softens, he begins wondering not only about the history and evolution of the modern baseball glove, but the unusual connection and oftentimes personal bond between player and this outwardly lifeless piece of sporting equipment.

His curiosity grew.
First he hits the library and the internet. Then, as the glove softens and his knowledge deepens, he considers hitting the road. Why not, he thought, go south for the winter and maybe, for one more season, play a little ball? In this case ball means Super Senior Softball.

With leaves falling, trees growing bare, and another long winter looming, he decides to do just that. But as journeys go, this one becomes so much more than anything he expected or imagined it might. For Love of the Glove takes readers along for the ride. And what a ride it turns out to be!!
